 What is Myotherapy?

Myotherapy is the assessment, treatment and management of musculoskeletal conditions, which may cause muscular dysfunction and pain thus affecting movement and mobility.  Myotherapists utilise a range of treatment techniques to restore and maintain the normal integrity of the soft tissue structures (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia).

Trigger points within muscles are an example of muscle dysfunction that can cause deep aching pain, local tenderness, referred pain limiting strength and flexibility.  Utilising palpation skills a myotherapist can identify trigger points and deactivate them using various soft tissue manipulation techniques.

Muscular dysfunction can be caused by trauma, overload or misuse of muscles arising from occupational, sporting or recreational activities.

During your first appointment let’s get to know each other – allow at least an hour for a postural and mobility assessment, a brief chat about your lifestyle & an introductory treatment to address your muscular issues.

Myotherapy can assist with the following

  • Lateral or Medial Epicondylitis due to chronic overuse in wrists, hands and elbows (tennis/golfers elbow)
  • Repetitive strain injuries caused by work or exercise (computer work, running, tennis etc)
  • Pain or muscle tightness caused by incorrect muscle activation
  • Headaches or Migraines
  • Sciatica - nerve entrapment
  • Knee, Hip & Ankle pain
  • Shoulder impingement/mobility - Frozen shoulder
  • General tightness
  • Numbness and tingling in extremities
  • Neck and shoulder pain
  • Foot and ankle pain, sprain/strain rehab

Myotherapy treatment uses a wide range of therapies to get you moving freely, minimising pain, reducing stress and feeling wonderful.

Myotherapy techniques may include

  • Soft tissue manipulation
  • Trigger point release
  • dry needling
  • deep tissue massage
  • hot and cold therapies
  • passive and active stretching
  • corrective and rehabilitative exercises

An initial assessment which may take ten to fifteen minutes will tailor treatment to your specific needs.  Depending on this treatment, the client may need to undress down to underwear or wear loose comfortable clothing.  Ongoing treatments may be 30-45 minutes, but the first consultation will need to be at least 60 minutes to incorporate assessment.

There are contraindications, certain medical conditions and pregnancy that will prevent techniques used during remedial massage and myotherapy treatment.  Please fill in as much detail as you can on the client consent form.  Be confident that your privacy is protected and details will only be shared with health professionals with your written consent.  Clients who have private health insurance or employer provided insurance may be eligible for refunds on myotherapy fees. Myotherapy is often included in the 'Extras' schedule
